Answer Engine Optimization: how to get cited by ChatGPT and Perplexity

9 min readSEO

Answer Engine Optimization is structuring content so AI assistants can extract, trust and cite it. In practice it means a short direct answer at the top of every section, FAQ schema with question-shaped headings, and verifiable numbers with sources. It is less about keywords than about being quotable.

What is Answer Engine Optimization?

AEO is the practice of writing and marking up content so that AI answer engines can lift a passage from it and attribute the answer to you. Traditional SEO optimises for a click. AEO optimises for a citation, which may never produce a click at all.

That sounds like a downgrade until you notice where attention is moving. When someone asks an assistant which web studio to use, the shortlist it reads out is the shortlist. Being absent from it is not a ranking problem, it is an existence problem.

What does AEO change about how you write?

Three things, and none of them are keyword density.

  • Answer first, elaborate second

Every major section opens with a 40 to 60 word answer to the heading. Answer engines lift that block. Burying the answer in paragraph four means the model summarises paragraph one instead.

  • Headings shaped like questions

Real questions, phrased the way a person would ask them. This is how retrieval matches your section to a query.

  • Numbers with sources

Answer engines weight verifiable claims heavily and are visibly reluctant to repeat unsourced assertions. A statistic with a link is worth more than a paragraph of confident adjectives.

The uncomfortable implication: content written to be skimmed by humans and content written to be quoted by machines now look remarkably similar. Both reward getting to the point.

Which schema markup actually matters?

FAQPage and Article carry most of the weight. FAQPage because it hands the engine a pre-formatted question and answer pair, and Article because it establishes authorship, dates and topic.

Beyond those, Organization and BreadcrumbList help establish who you are and how the page fits. Speakable is worth adding but currently does little. Schema you cannot see the value of is usually schema you should not add — invalid markup is worse than none.

How long does AEO take to work?

Faster than classic SEO, which is the genuinely surprising part. Perplexity tends to reflect structural changes within a week because it retrieves live. ChatGPT takes two to three weeks. Google's AI Overviews are slowest, at up to six.

Compare that with three to six months for a competitive keyword to move, and AEO starts to look like the higher-leverage work for a small business — particularly one that cannot outspend larger competitors on links.

Does AEO conflict with normal SEO?

No. Almost everything AEO asks for — clear structure, direct answers, valid schema, sourced claims, fast pages — is what technical SEO has asked for all along. The difference is emphasis rather than direction.

The one real tension is length. Classic SEO rewarded long, comprehensive pages. Answer engines reward extractable passages. The resolution is not shorter content but better-segmented content: long pages made of self-contained sections.

Common questions

Is AEO replacing SEO?
No. It is an additional surface, not a replacement. Traditional search still drives the majority of traffic for most businesses, and the technical foundations are largely shared between the two.
Do I need FAQ schema on every page?
Only where you genuinely answer questions. Marking up content as an FAQ when it is not one risks a manual action, and search engines have become noticeably better at spotting it.
How do I know if an AI engine is citing me?
Ask them. Query ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Mode with the questions your customers ask and see who gets named. It is manual, but there is no reliable rank tracker for answer engines yet.
Does AEO work without existing authority?
Better than classic SEO does. Retrieval favours a well-structured page that answers the question directly over a vague page from a stronger domain, which is why structure is currently the more accessible lever for small businesses.
